Home Cinema Lighting Project 4

This is a project which falls into the "small, but perfectly formed" category, showing that you don't need a huge amount of space to create a comfortable and stylish environment in which to enjoy your favourite movies.

Star ceiling in a loft conversion.

The fibre optic star ceiling is limited to the flat part of the ceiling since there was easy access above for fitting the fibres, although adding stars to the sloping sections would have made for an even nicer look. To see an example of this approach visit http://www.starscape.co.uk/cp53.php

When our customer, Justin F, first phoned to discuss his project it was immediately clear that we'd need to produce a custom fibre harness. However, this isn't a problem - it's something we do more or less every day of the week - and it can often save a customer money since it tailors fibre use precisely to the requirements of the project.

So, having agreed on the numbers and lengths of fibres required, Starscape made up the kit and it was then up the Justin to get on with the project.

"The star ceiling install was very easy," he reports. "Our electrician had a small apprentice who didn't mind spending a few hours in a small space, feeding the fibres through as we were drilling the holes!

"We have it set so that when you walk into the room the stars are twinkling," says Justin, "but we have the twinkle wheel on a separate supply so that when you press "Watch DVD" on the remote, the stars stop twinkling."

When agreeing the specification for the fibre optics kit Justin had selected an upgraded version of the halogen light source which allows the colour/twinkle wheel to be switched separately from the main on/off switch. When a colour wheel is fitted this allows you to select a static colour, rather than having a constant cycle through all six colours on the wheel.

"The star ceiling is one of the more cost-effective parts of my cinema," says a satisfied Justin, "and also one of the most effective.
