Patio and decking lighting kits

Fibre optic deck lighting offers great possibilities in the garden, and can be used to dramatic effect in decking, patio lighting or garden path lighting projects.

The simplest deck lighting designs can be very effective – see our Path Lighting project in the Projects Section. This was the work of one of our customers, and while there’s no doubt she put a lot of effort into the project and achieved a fantastic result, the principle is simplicity itself. Bare fibres were inserted into pre-drilled holes in the paving slabs, and the ends cut back flush with the top surface.

This simple technique can be used to add bright spots of light to paved paths or patios or to wooden decking. Alternatively the fibres could be inserted in path edging. One customer bought a kit to create a “vertical star field”, with the fibres inserted in the surface of a new garden wall which was built to provide a privacy screen from neighbours. A landscape gardener adopted a similar approach on behalf of a client, but in this case the wall was made up of a row of railway sleepers standing vertically.

If the patio/decking is adjacent to the wall of the house or a garden wall, you might arrange the decking lighting to create a colourwash effect up the wall.

In decking, the fibres don’t have to be limited to the deck itself – why not put some in any handrails around the deck. You’ll need a router for this job (for the most elegant finish) but it’s a simple enough task.

The kit light fittings can be installed in any surface

Garden pond or water feature? Since there’s no electricity in the fibres you can experiment in complete safety.

Where the area to be lit is close to the house, the lightsource will typically be indoors – possibly in the kitchen, conservatory, utility room or garage – but it can also be located outdoors as long as it’s in a weatherproof IP enclosure.

The bare fibre approach is the simplest and cheapest way of adding optical fibre lighting to your garden, but the kits include optional plastic end fittings which you use if you want larger, but more diffuse points of light.

If your need is for brighter pools of light, we can offer metal deck fittings designed for use with much thicker bundled fibre. Typically these would be used as alternatives to LED or low-voltage halogen lights. Fibre optics will probably be more expensive to purchase, but they do offer worthwhile benefits. By changing the colour wheel or twinkle wheel in the lightsource you can vary the light effects – something not normally possible with either LEDs or halogen spots. There’s only the one bulb to ever change, whereas with individual halogen spots you might have to change a few bulbs every season. LEDs are a fast-developing technology, but LEDs do fail, and when they do you’ll be left with gaps in your lighting design and little chance of finding replacements.

And, of course, fibre optics gives you the ability to keep the electrical component well out of harm’s way.

There's no reason why you can't mix some little points of light (created with single fibres, with or without acrylic end fittings) with larger lights (using the bundled fibre and stainless steel fittings) all in the same "harness". Although we do offer some "standard" kits - see below - we're happy to make up a custom kit to meet your specific requirements. Don't hesitate to e-mail or 'phone - we're always happy to discuss your project ideas.

*Sheathed fibre is often the best solution for outdoor projects since the pvc sheathing protects the fibre from mechanical or chemical damage and also prevents the fibre from glowing along its length. For instance, in a deck with gaps between the planking, bare fibre may be seen glowing below the deck, whereas the black sheathed fibre should be more or less invisible. And, while you pay a premium for the sheathed fibre, it's also nicer to handle!
